The city of South Houston is a large suburban part of Houston and given the location there are obviously plenty of attractive reasons to move to the area. South Houston is essentially a part of downtown Houston which puts it right in the heart of the city with all of the businesses and companies so jobs are always plentiful in the area. There are also plenty of homes and rental properties available although some of them are quite small due to the lack of space in the city. There is also plenty of shopping and entertainment opportunities in the area thanks to the close proximity to downtown Houston.
South Houston is obviously named due to being so close to Houston and while many people think it is actually part of Houston it is in fact a completely separate city. South Houston has all of the government and public works programs you would expect from any other city so in every single way South Houston is a full city in itself. Probably the biggest complaint about South Houston though is that it really does blend in closely with Houston; the traffic and congestion of Houston carries over into South Houston so unless you are specifically looking for some downtown style living South Houston probably isn't the greatest choice for you.
Of course being close to Houston is not all bad. Regardless of what type of job you need or want there are always plenty available within a short drive thanks to the huge size of Houston. Crime is slightly more prevalent in South Houston when compared to the national average as well but that is to be expected with any downtown location. Of course South Houston also offers plenty of schools and educational centers as well so children living in the area are sure to receive a quality education through the public school system. Currently approximately 17,000 people live in South Houston which is quite a lot considering the small size but once again, this is somewhat expected given the downtown location of the city. Overall South Houston is a nice city with plenty of benefits and bonuses; as long as you have no reservations about essentially living right next to downtown Houston then South Houston might be a great choice. If you want something a little more suburban or laid back then keep looking because South Houston is not going to offer this for you.
